A haunting procession of pious images edited from Jose Val Del Omar’s 1960s short film Fuego en Castilla.
ジェームズ・レイランド・カービーはベルリンの共産主義者が建てた高層ビルの43階に暮らしている。彼は主として黴びたブラッドソーセージで生活し音楽を作ることだけに一日を費やす。1999年に最初のアルバムを制作して以来信じられない数の作品をリリースしていて、様々なフィルム・プロジェクトも展開している。The Stranger名義での久々のリリースは時代を象徴する我らモダンラヴからリリースされた。The Stranger のサイドB1曲目に収録されている “Where Are Our Monsters Now, Where Are Our Friend”のyoutubeには、1961年にカンヌで発表されたホセ・ヴァル・デル・オマールの映画 ” Fuego en Castilla ” のワンシーンが使われていて、この映画は、西洋から東洋へ交差する宗教彫刻がまるで夢遊病者がみる夢のように交錯するもので、数100年にもわたるイスラーム支配のあったスペインならではの、イスラーム哲学思想が色濃く流れている。

常に燃えているスクリーン、火のように、それがイメージおよび触覚的でリアルなelectroac音とともに迫ってくる。バリャドリードの、宗教彫刻博物館の無限の数の彫像、死と愛。イーゴリ・ストラヴィンスキー、マンボ・ジャズおよびリズム、様々なノイズ、ミュージックコンクレート、フィールドレコーディング、、、恐怖のTactilvisión del páramo。映画の信仰者が存在していた時代があったように、音楽の信仰者が時代のなかにリアルに存在していた頃もあった。ホセ・ヴァル・デル・オマルも正にその作品にみられる異常な芸術的・技術的な才能からしても映画の信仰者のひとりだった。”Picto-Luminic-Audio-Tactile” artと呼ばれる芸術の統合。ホセ・ヴァル・デル・オマルの「触覚のビジョン」という映像には”diaphonic sound”というエレクトロ・アコースティックなフィールドが流れているが、音楽を聴くことによっても発生するイメージってなんだろうね。「 イメージまたは心的イメージ（しんてきイメージ、英語：Mental image）とは、何かの物体、出来事、または情景などを知覚する経験に極めて似通った経験であるが、対象となるはずの当の物体、出来事、また情景が感覚において現前していないような経験を言う ( ウィキペディア) 」。聴覚イメージといっても、それは常に「視覚」イメージとして現出する。それも考えれば不思議な経験だ。

このアルバムは、ゴダールの横目で見るレンズのように、音を、それ相当の物に作成しようと製作された。この表現でこのアルバムの意図は充分通じるだろう。古いゾンビB級映画からのドラム音サンプルや、スムーズな物語性をも疎外するほどの大胆な「分断と再構築」の編集術？によって供給された” The Stranger – Watching Dead Empires In Decay ” 、それらにデムダイク・ステアのイメージが重なる。暗いダークアンビエントだけど、ぼくにとってはとてもモダンで、ファッショナブルな音楽、、、ところで彼は音楽産業をばかにして数年を過ごし、その悪評の高さは有名。「音楽に携わる人間はバカばかりで、ほんとうに音楽を聴いているであろう人々はほとんどいないだろう」、「誰もカルトの地位を達成する目的で始めません。それらは、もし行えば、失敗するでしょう。真実のカルト・ステータスは、ある姿勢、キャラクター、ビジョンおよび意図の結果です。それは、単に主体性のない人々の注意に達しない以上のものです。理想的なカルト収集者は、限定版に生きがいを持つアバンギャルドのelectronicaの眼鏡をかけた学芸員です」と。

ドイツのフィルムメーカーW.G.ゼーバルトのドキュメンタリーフィルム 「 忍耐 Patience (After Sebald)’ 」のサウンドトラック。歴史、廃墟、哀悼といったテーマからなる多層の映画エッセイで、「忍耐」のための資料はドイツの作家WGシーボルド(1944-2001)の作品、および彼の最も有名な本「土星の環」や、フランツ・シューベルトの1827個「Winterreise」からの分離された破片などが使われていて、2012年2月14日にHistory Always Favours The Winnersからリリースされた。The Caretakerの9thアルバム。アートワークはIvan Sealの絵画。

Patience is a soundtrack to Grant Gee’s film about German writer WG Sebald. It’s described as a ‘multi-layered film essay on landscape, art, history, life and loss’, told through a long walk along the coast of East Anglia. Gee originally asked Kirby to soundtrack the film back in 2009. To put together the music, Kirby tracked down Franz Schubert records from 1927 which are now long out of copyright, and like the rest of his Caretaker records assembled the final piece from degraded shards and samples of the originals. It’s a fractured, brooding and very beautiful listen, its pianos half-vanished in vinyl crackle, static and murk. …
